Breast reduction is thought of a cosmetic procedure done to correct the appearance of a woman’s breasts, however it is a reconstructive operation that is not aesthetic.
Women undergoing this procedure will communicate their desired results with their doctors to explore the possibilities. The aim of breast reduction is to create natural looking breasts.
Weight gain, breastfeeding, genetic factors, hormonal changes, and/or certain diseases cause large and sagging breasts. This may cause back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and a humpback. In addition, women will also opt for breast reduction due to difficulty breathing, breast teat and skin sores caused by friction. Large breasts may cause a woman to feel self-conscious about her physique and may influence her choice of clothing.
The final result of the surgery will depend on age, skin elasticity, lifestyle, and hereditary factors. Pregnancy and excessive weight gain during the post-surgery period will certainly cause some changes in your breasts. But since there is a decrease in breast tissue, these changes will not be as drastic.
Preoperative care
It is important that you express your expectations clearly with your surgeon. An examination will be conducted, taking into consideration the following factors: the size of your breasts, the condition of your skin, your age, and whether you have children or not.
The following physical examinations will be carried out: a pathology test, chest film removal, mammography, and even breast ultrasound, if necessary.
Smoking should be avoided 2-weeks prior to your surgery and 10-15 days after your surgery.
Breast Reduction Operation
Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia and usually lasts 2.5 to 4 hours. During breast reduction surgery, an incision is created around the nipple where excess breast tissue and skin are removed. The nipple is then modified to suit the breasts.
Postoperative care
After surgery, hospitalisation of about 2-3 days is required. The patient may resume work after 1 week. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for 2 months.
Expect swelling and slight bruises. This will disappear after awhile. The final results will be visible after 6-months to 1-year. During this period, weight gain and hormonal changes will influence the shape of the breasts.
Expect some scarring from the surgical incision. This will usually fade over time.
The Risks of Breast Reduction Surgery
As with every surgery, breast reduction surgery has some risks. Rarely, haemorrhaging may occur. There is an increased risk of Infection, which rarely occurs. To reduce the risk of infection, the surgeon uses protective antibiotics prior to surgery. Allergic reactions may occur. There may be a delay in the healing of the wound.
There may be a temporary decrease in nipple and skin sensitivity. You may not be satisfied with the size and shape of the breasts immediately after surgery as they are not the final results. Stiffness in the breasts may occur in rare cases. Neck, back and shoulder pain may continue after the surgery due to strain placed on these areas prior to surgery.
