As ageing progresses, it is natural for skin to sag in certain parts of the body. The eyelids are no exception, as some people are more prone to eyelids sagging. Blepharoplasty or “eyelid surgery” is performed for both health purposes and aesthetical purposes.
Blepharoplasty is performed by removing excess skin from the upper eyelids and/or lower eyelids. This procedure reduces the appearance of sagging skin and wrinkles, revealing the natural structure of the eye.
Upper Eyelids
Patients with excess skin on the upper eyelid experience tiredness in their eyes. The excess skin causes weight to fall onto the eye, causing strained vision. This procedure will improve fatigue caused by strained vision, as well as improving aesthetics.
Upper eyelid surgery is performed with the removal of the mass of fat that forms deeply on the eye. An incision is made over the fold line in the upper eyelid to prevent the appearance of scarring.
After surgery
Upper eyelid surgery takes 1.5 to 2 hours. This procedure does not require a dressing. However, sunglasses are required when going outdoors.
Bruising and swelling will disappear within 5-7 days. Work and social life can be resumed a week after the operation. Healing is complete after 6 months from the procedure.
Lower eyelid
In the lower eyelid surgery, large “bags” under the eye are removed. In order to avoid scarring after the procedure, an incision is made under the lower lash line.
After surgery
Lower eyelid surgery lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours. After the procedure, there will be bruising and swelling, but they will disappear in 1 week. The patient can return to work within 7-10 days of the operation. After 6 months, complete recovery is seen.
Surgical procedures are performed under local anaesthesia with sedation if necessary. After the procedure, the patient can go home the same day. There are no complications because dressing does not close the eye. There is no scarring after eyelid surgery. The tissues on the lid heal rapidly. Another important detail is that smokers should quit smoking a few weeks before the procedure. After the procedure, they should not smoke again for a few weeks.
